West Springfield High Students to Utilize New Laptops This School Year

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A generous offering to students at West Springfield High School – with a catch. Each and every student will be given a laptop to take home.

The school’s interim Principal Maria Silvestri says, “This year, every one of students in our building from grade nine through twelve is going to receive a Chromebook and teachers are being trained in using the technology to enhance educational opportunities.”

The catch is that what those students do on those laptops won’t exactly be private.

“We want to make sure the students are using the Chromebooks for educational purposes only, so there is a monitoring program in place that will provide us with that information to make sure that they are in the right place at the right time,” Silvestri adds.

So, the students gain a laptop, but there will be strict controls on what they can use them for. Silvestri says it was tried last year with success.

Silvestri explains, “We did have a pilot last year where we had certain classes using Chromebooks and the kids across the board loved them.”

The Chromebooks will be passed out during the first two days of school.
