Connecticut Chicken Farming Fighting Zoning Rules
Zoning Enforcement Officer James Taylor ordered Kathleen Mormino to comply with a town regulation requiring at least 5 acres to raise chickens, designating the property a farm.
The Journal Inquirer reports that Mormino is raising more than 40 chickens at her home’s 2 acres. The free-range chickens, which she raises mostly for eggs, roam her back yard, which is fenced in. She also has three chicken coops.
The town is suing her and her husband, Thomas, to enforce the order.
Taylor says Kathleen Mormino is trying to buy 3 acres of property next door that she’s leasing.
Mormino says she doesn’t know how long it will take to buy the land.
