SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) — Springfield Fire Department Commissioner Joseph Conant is recovering after being attacked and assaulted at his home Tuesday night by a former disgruntled employee.

James Leydon, Communications Director for Mayor Domenic Sarno, said in a statement late Tuesday night that the former employee is Michael Richard, who fled the scene of the assault.

A police investigation by the East Longmeadow and Springfield Police Departments into the matter is ongoing, and police say criminal charges are expected to be filed.

Mayor Sarno, who was with Commissioner Conant at Baystate Medical Center, stated, “Commissioner Conant is in good health and in good spirits.”

Also with Fire Commissioner Conant was Police Commissioner John Barbieri who stated, “At this point an investigation is underway and a criminal complaint is being sought.”

Conant was treated and released from Baystate Medical Center. ABC40 will follow the details as this story continues to develop.
