Cuban Castillo to Make Professional Debut on Sunday
BOSTON (WGGB) — The Red Sox newest and most-touted addition will make his professional baseball debut on Sunday.
Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo, 27, will suit up for Boston’s rookie-level Gulf Coast League affiliate.
The Red Sox earned Castillo’s services, when they signed him to a seven-year, $72 million contract on August 22nd.
Castillo has been working out at the team’s facility since Wednesday, but had to wait to obtain a work visa before he could play in a game.
Red Sox Manager John Farrell expects Castillo to play three innings in the first game of the Gulf Coast League Red Sox league finals against the GCL Yankees.
Although it’s his professional debut, Castillo will be five years older than the team’s oldest player. The GCL Red Sox have 22 teenagers on their roster.
