Human Rights Organization Shedding Light on Migration Dangers
Organization workers and activists said migrants often suffer sexual abuse and exploitation in the process. Amnesty International Mexico also launched a website called “Paso Migratorio” where they publish first-hand accounts of the abuses migrants have endured.
Critics of the new program argue that nothing will stop migrants from finding ways to enter the United States.
Mexico has also started to crack down on migrants who try to jump on the freight train known as La Bestia and illegally cross into the U.S.
The roundups follow U.S. requests for help from Mexico, as well as Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador earlier this summer when the number of unaccompanied minors turning themselves into the U.S. Border Patrol reached what President Barack Obama called an “urgent humanitarian crisis.”
