BOSTON (AP) — A U.S. Coast Guard crew and a Provincetown-based marine research center have freed a leatherback turtle that became entangled in lines near a buoy off of Cape Cod.

Watchstanders in Boston got a call from the fishing boat Laura C, which saw the turtle in distress Friday near a buoy in Quicks Hole Pass.

A Coast Guard crew from Station Woods Hole and a member of the Center for Coastal Studies responded. The turtle was freed from the lines and released.

Officials said the key to the rescue was a combination of the Coast Guard’s ability to respond quickly and the center’s specialized knowledge of marine animals.
