HOLYOKE, Mass. (abc40) -- A city man has been ordered held on $25,000 cash bail after allegedly beating a woman with a hammer Sunday.
Police officers were called to 298 Elm St., Sunday, after a man beat a victim in a first floor apartment. Oscar Guzman allegedly used both a hammer and knife to attack Angelica Burgos, who suffered a blow to the forehead and a laceration above her right eyebrow. Burgos was transported to Holyoke Medical Center where she was treated and released.
Police officers found Guzman on a roof at 300 Chestnut St. Guzman was uncooperative following his arrest, using obscene language and resisting the officers, according to police. Guzman later kicked out a side window of the police cruiser, showering glass fragments on the officers, at whom Guzman also spat, according to police.
Guzman was booked and his bail was set at $100,000 until his arraignment Monday. Guzman pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Holyoke District Court and was ordered held on $25,000 cash bail.
"Here is another example of the failure of the Commonwealth's judicial system. A career criminal just five years after becoming an adult under Massachusetts law, has accumulated an average of 5.2 criminal arraignments per year on serious charges and is still walking the streets and not behind bars. What do you have to do before you are held without bail? I guess you literally have to kill someone," said Police Chief Anthony Scott in a statement released to the media Monday.
