Fire in Springfield Stresses Importance of Smoke Detectors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (abc40) Saturday's Bay Street fire that left two boys dead has fire officials urging people to use smoke detectors.

"You can double your chances of surving a residential house fire by having a working smoke detector," says Fire Department Spokesperson Dennis Leger.

Leger says smoke detectors should be tested twice a year and new batteries should be installed once a year. He says to test smoke detectors, press the 'test' button on the device to see if the alarm activates. Do not use an open flame to test smoke detectors.

The Red Cross is working with other agencies to assist the family who lived in the Bay Street Home.

Fire officials say the fire appears to have been electrical.

The family's church is accepting all kinds of donations.
