LEVERETT, Mass. (WGGB) -- Authorities have identified Friday a man that was killed when an Amtrak passenger train struck him Thursday just north of the Amherst line as a 19-year-old University of Massachusetts at Amherst student from France.
According Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel's office, Peter Boutarel, who was 19 and a sophomore at the university, was pronounced dead at the scene, but the manner and cause of death were still under investigation Friday. They said the investigation into the death was still ongoing.
A spokesperson for UMass said grief counseling would be made available for students in the wake of Boutarel's death. He also said Boutarel had lived in a dormitory on the school's campus.
Amtrak spokesperson Cliff Cole said at 1:22 p.m. Thursday, the Vermonter passenger train struck and killed a Boutarel as he was allegedly illegally walking on the tracks.

The train was traveling south from St. Albans, Vt., to Washington D.C., and its next stop would have been in Amherst. The train was stopped at the scene with the passengers on board for four hours while an investigation was conducted into the accident, according to Cole. According to Amtrak, the train arrived in Amherst at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.
