NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) - Two people have been treated for smoke inhalation after a fire ripped through a two-family home in the Florence section of the city early Wednesday morning, according to fire officials.
The report for the blaze came in just before 3:30 a.m. at 286 North Main St., which initially was said to be outside the building, according to the fire department. However, numerous calls came in for flames coming from the roof of the building, they said. Firefighters arriving within three minutes of the initial call were able to enter the structure and assist two people out of the home before mounting an attack on the flames inside the building to keep them from spreading, according to the fire department.
A second alarm brought firefighters from Williamsburg, Westhampton, Easthampton and Amherst, while Hatfield and Hadley firefighters covered fire stations in the event of another emergency, according to Northampton fire officials.
In all, three people living in the building who were home at the time of the fire received services from the American Red Cross as a result of the fire, according to the agency. One person has been given temporary lodging, food and clothing, while the needs of the other two were still being evaulated Wednesday morning, according to the agency, which added they would be afforded food, shelter and clothing as needed.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation Wednesday morning.
