WESTFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) -- A fight in the Westfield High School cafeteria has landed a 14-year-old student in a hospital trauma center and is touching off a legal dispute over policy.
Nelson Roque needed facial reconstructive surgery, which involved three plates and 18 screws being put in his face, after being brought to Baystate Medical Center following the fight, but his mother, Kimberly, said she still doesn't know exactly what happened to her son.
According to Roque, the fight had been caught on a high school security camera, but she said school officials have refused to allow her to see the tape citing privacy laws.
School administrators have said they couldn't show the tape because they would need to blur the faces of other students and they are not allowed to alter the tape, so a subpoena must be obtained to view it.
A police report filed in the case alleges the attacker is 17-year-old Hector Martinez. According to court documents, the investigating officers has requested the case be reviewed to determine if Martinez, who was suspended from school, according to Roque, should face criminal charges.
