WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (abc40)-- Students offered to roll up their sleeves by the dozen at West Springfield High School on Thursday. The American Red Cross and Bob's Discount Furniture have partnered to get young people to give blood.
Bob Kaufman, owner of Bob's Discount Furniture, is putting at least $100,000 into the cause.
"It became very personal to me when my Father needed blood to stay alive. He had a type of Leukemia," says Kaufman.
Kaufman is giving scholarship money to the schools that hold a minimum of two blood drives and get at least 30 percent of the student body to participate. He has pledged to give $250 to $10,000 to the schools that meet the challenge. School administrators award the scholarships to the most instrumental student organizers.
The program is going on in Connecticut and Massachusetts.
