SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) -- A Hampden Superior Court jury has found Marion Szlachta guilty of first degree murder for killing his 43-year-old roommate with a baseball bat in 2008.

Szlachta, 57, has been sentenced to serve a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole, according to Hampden County District Attorney William Bennett's office.

Both Szlachta and his victim, Randy Maleski, had been living at 7 Trafton St., in Chicopee when the July 8, 2008 murder occurred.

Maleski had been the city's first murder in two years.
