AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) -- Police are urging people to be vigilant in the wake of a string of reported break-ins in apartment complexes near the University of Massachusetts recently.

Amherst Police Department Capt. Jennifer Gundersen said the burglaries appear to be crimes of opportunity as thieves have taken advantage of unlocked doors or windows. She said the burglars have been taking electronic devices.

Break-ins have been reported at Puffton Village, Townehose Apartments and Brandywine Apartments.

According to Gundersen, residents should lock their doors and windows and keep an out for their neighbors. She also urged anyone who witnesses anything suspicious to immediately report it to the police department so it can be investigated.

Anyone with any information is urged to contact Amherst police at (413) 259-3000.
