Outpatient Clinic Closes at Holyoke Soldiers Home

HOLYOKE, Mass. (abc40)-- Veterans at the Holyoke Soldiers Home will have to go elsewhere for outpatient care.

As of Tuesday, December 1st, the clinic is closing because of budget cuts imposed by Governor Deval Patrick.

Veterans like Allan Simpson are critical of those cuts, "I think they're ridiculous, 500-thousand dollars is a drop in the bucket."

While the clinic is closing, other veterans like John Byrnes still don't know where they'll turn for help, "I have no idea, I'm in limbo".

One of the places where veterans may turn to is the VA Medical Center in Leeds. Public Relations Manager Mary Rodowicz says veterans coming from Holyoke should check their eligibility because the VA Center in Leeds is a federal facility while the Holyoke Soldiers Home is state-run, "We have a full range of primary and specialty care, we have pharmacy, lab, and we provide outpatient care at clinics in Springfield on Bond Street, Greenfield, Pittsfield, in addition to our Leeds campus," says Rodowicz.

Veterans can call the VA in Leeds at (413) 582-3091 for more information about eligibility.
