LUDLOW, Mass. (WGGB) -- Police have identified the young man who drowned yesterday after being going missing and pulled from the beneath the water of Haviland Pond for more than a half hour Wednesday morning.

According to fire officials, the report for the missing swimmer came in around 10:48 a.m., and an ambulance, rescue boat and about a half dozen fire station personnel responded to the scene.  Ludlow Police report that lifeguards saw the swimmer go under the water as he swam with two friends from the state boat ramp towards the island.

Fire officials said the missing swimmer was recovered around 11:20 a.m. and rushed him to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where he was pronounced dead later in the day.

Ludlow Police identify the teenager as 19-year-old Ansar Shakirov of California.  They add that he was staying with relatives in West Springfield prior to his death.  In addition, the boat ramp has been closed until further notice by the town, according to police.  They are also going to strictly enforce a 24-hour no trespass rule at that location due to the number of incidents there.

Haviland Pond has a public beach along Center Street, which is not far from the Massachusetts Turnpike.
