Nurses' Contract Negotiations Continue

NORTHAMPTON, Mass (abc40) - Contract negotiations continue between unionized registered nurses and Cooley Dickinson Hospital.  The nurses' contract expired in January.  Eight months later a new contract has not been nailed down, primarily because of three key issues.

The primary point of contention is language in the old contract, allowing charge nurses to remain members of the bargaining unit.  Christine Orlen, a registered nurse and co-chair of the bargaining unit, says "Without this language, we are in danger of losing a good part of our membership."  Orlen believes having unionized nurses is good for the patients, good for the hospital and ultimately, good for the community.

Nurses are also concerned with the administration's move to make Veterans' Day a floating holiday.  Hospital Executive Vice President and COO, Carol Smith says "We are trying to meet the needs of our community and respect our nurses and veterans."  Smith remains postive about the negotiations, saying both sides are bargaining in good faith and the process remains cordial.  She added, "We have great respect for our nurses.  We really appreciate what they do for our patients every day."

The final point at issue is the hospital's overall ability to recruit and retain quality nurses by offering competitive wages.  Both parties are returning to the negotiating table later this month. While they may not see eye-to-eye on the issues, everyone agrees that the contract process will not interfere with daily patient care.

The unionized registered nurses picketed outside Cooley Dickinson Monday evening, along with representatives of the Massachusettes Nurses Association.  The nurses have no plans to strike.
