NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (abc40)-- Looking for that last minute gift, and want something unique? The people over at Northampton Aeronautics think they have a good idea for you.
Believe it or not, becoming a pilot starts with a very hands on lesson. And they're offering introductory lessons for $99 this holiday season. Considering how much everything costs these days, it may be a good option for an aspiring airman or woman.
"For most people, this will be their first experience with an aircraft," says Richard MacIsaac, who manages the airfield and flight school. "They've never even been on a commercial flight."
If you think the first time will be looking over books and watching the teacher, guess again. abc40 went along, playing the part of a first time student. And we were amazed at how hands on it was.
A student will actually sit in the pilot's seat, take-off, and pilot the aircraft for the majority of the flight around Western Mass. The whole experience lasts about an hour.
