Dog Racing Coming to End in Massachusetts but Not Without a Fight

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) -- A Massachusetts dog track has run it's final lap but the race continues on Beacon Hill.

The Wonderland Greyhound park held what was supposed to be it's final live competition Friday. Massachusetts voters banned dog racing last November and the track had until January to phase it out.

However, managers of that track, along with Raynham Park, are asking legislators to consider delaying the ban and giving them an extension until 2012.

Many animal rights groups oppose the proposed delay. The Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society says it's concerned about dog confinement and injury issues. Plus, a spokesperosn says money has been set aside to help train track workers for new jobs.

Still, the tracks are fighting, and are also asking to simulcast live races from other states and to take bets on them.

A committee is considering the issue but time is running out.
