Western Mass. News First Warning weekday evening Meteorologist Rick Sluben has 13 years of forecasting experience here in western Massachusetts and over 24 years as a meteorologist in general.
His long career as a broadcast meteorologist began in the mid-1990s for WSI Corporation in Andover, Mass. where he was a regular on-air meteorologist for cable networks such as MSNBC, Fox News Channel and Bloomberg TV, covering many major weather disasters.
While at WSI, he also was the fill-in meteorologist at WFXT-TV, the FOX affiliate in Boston.
Rick then moved to western Massachusetts and spent nearly a decade broadcasting and forecasting for WWLP here in Springfield before working mostly weekends at WGGB starting in early 2011 while teaching Earth Science at a local STEM school.
He has two degrees in meteorology – a B.S. degree in meteorology from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire and a M.S. degree in meteorology from Florida State University.
Rick grew up in southern Connecticut and is a lifelong New England native that remembers experiencing epic storms like the Blizzard of ’78 and Hurricane Gloria and forecasting for Hurricane Bob in 1991, the March 1993 Superstorm, the April Fool’s Snowstorm of 1997, the December 2008 epic ice storm, the 2011 Springfield tornado and Halloween Nor’easter and many others!
Rick is an avid outdoor enthusiast – particularly hiking, biking and skiing. He’s also a big photography fan and fall foliage fanatic – especially in the lakes and mountains of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine!
Rick’s forecasts can be seen weekday evenings on Western Mass. News.
