HOLYOKE, Mass. (abc40) Data from the U.S Fire Administration has shown the leading cause of death for firefighters is heart attack. Last week, a Holyoke firefighter was almost added to the statistics.
Patrick McKenna, 42, suffered a heart attack while sitting in his living room. His wife called 911 and the first responders to the scene were three of his fellow firefighters.
"At first when we got the call I didn't know it was his house, then we pulled up and George said oh my God, it's Pat's house," says David McKenna (no relation).
Patrick's friends were able to restore his consciousness and paramedics brought him to BayState Medical Center. The father of two is now recovering at home and he says he has his friends, family and the medical professionals of Holyoke and Springfield to thank for his life.
"They did a miracle, they brought me back," he says.
